In its early days, Blue Springs functioned as a stopping point for settlers moving west. Its refreshing water from a spring of the Little Blue River was a major attraction for weary travelers. The construction of a grist mill – located in the area that is now Burrus Old Mill Park – encouraged permanent settlement.
Blue Springs was founded in 1827. Its first post office was constructed in 1845. Franklin Smith, one of the area’s first settlers, was largely responsible for the creation of Blue Springs as well as its name. By 1970, approximately 7,000 people resided in Blue Springs. The area has since experienced continual healthy growth.
Locals pursue recreational activities at the various parks of Blue Springs. The Centennial Pool-Plex at Baumgardner Park has outdoor and indoor pools, a waterslide and a wading pool. Blue Springs’ parks have shelter houses, horseshoe pits, playgrounds, a BMX bicycle track, ball fields and sand volleyball, tennis and basketball courts. Hidden Valley Sports Complex and Vesper Hall Community Center are excellent indoor recreational spots. Golfers appreciate the 18-hole championship course at Adams Pointe Golf Club. Bicyclists enjoy Adams Dairy Parkway.
7,800-acre Fleming Park, the largest county park, encompasses both Lake Jacomo and Blue Springs Lake. Missouri Town 1855 is also located at the park. Missouri Town 1855 consists of about 25 buildings including a living history museum, which relates the lifestyle of this historic farming community that existed from the early- to mid-19th century. Buffalo, deer, elk and wild turkeys reside at Fleming Park.
The Blue Springs Federal Reservoir, about two miles from Blue Springs, has 13 miles of shoreline and is ideal for water sports enthusiasts. Residents participate in other recreational activities at the 1,071-acre Burr Oak Woods State Forest. The forest has a nature center and is popular among hikers, photographers and wildlife watchers. Nearby Watkins Mill State Park, Confederate Memorial State Park and Battle of Lexington State Park – which blend history with recreation – are educational as well as fun.
